Have You Ever Heard About God the Mother?
When you think about God, do you think of God as a male or a female? I like asking this question when I meet people in the street, and the answer I get the most is …drum roll… male. There are other answers, which I will address later, but the vast majority of people I meet say male. Now, when I follow up asking them why they think like that, or where did they get the thought that God is only male? Most of the people I have met say that’s what they’ve learned growing up, but they do not really know why. Then when I ask them what religion they consider themselves, I discover the source of their belief, because they always say they are either Christian or Catholic. Preconceived notions have caused people to make mistakes, let me share with you a riddle that illustrates this.
A father and his son are in a car accident.
The father dies instantly, and the son is taken to the nearest hospital.
The doctor comes in and exclaims “I can’t operate on this boy.”
“Why not?” the nurse asks.
“Because he’s my son,” the doctor responds.
How is this possible?
I give you time to think.
Take your time before you continue reading.
The doctor is the boy’s mother.
If it took you some time to figure this riddle out, or if this is even a riddle although the answer is so simple, it’s because the established bias that exists in today’s society that all Doctors are males. In reality, we know that there are female doctors, but we usually associate the word “doctor” with a male, just like when you read the word “nurse,” admit it…you thought female.
The riddle above helps us understand the reason why most Christians think of God as a male, it is a preconceived notion based on tradition and not on the Bible. When I tell people that the Bible talks about God being both a Father and a Mother, most people say: “Really?” to which I reply… yes, really.
God in Genesis Said Let US, Not Let Me.
When we read the book of Genesis we can find that God the creator spoke in the plural form and not in the singular form.
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
When we see God create mankind, God did not say, “Let Me make man in my image,” or “Let there be man.” God clearly said, “Let Us make man in Our image, and in our likeness.” Then why did God the creator speak in plural? Theologians and scholars have come up with elaborate explanations to this question, here are the three most common ones:
-
The “Us” in Genesis is referring to the Trinity.
-
The “Us” in Genesis is referring to God and the angels.
-
The “Us” in the trinity is the royal “We.”
Now all these elaborate suggestions could be right if verse 27 of Genesis chapter 1 didn’t exist. , but because verse 27 exists they are incorrect. Let’s read verse 26 and 27.
Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
As we can see in the image of God they were made, male and female. If the images that came out of God’s image are male and female, this means that the original – which is God – is also male and female. Therefore, the male image of God we refer to it as “Father,” then what should we call the female image of God? The right title is “Mother.”
God the Mother is not something new, the World Mission Society Church of God is not at a feminist rally out to prove to everyone God is a female also. God the Mother has always been in the Bible, it’s just that we didn’t know. Much like when everyone thought the earth was flat, it didn’t make it flat, people just didn’t know. In the same way, just because the majority of Christian’s think of God just as a Father, that doesn’t mean God is just a Father, Mother was always there.
God the Mother in Revelation
God the Mother appears in the book of Revelation as well, she appears as the bride of the Holy Spirit
Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
The Spirit and the Bride appear to give people the water of life. Most people here know that the Spirit refers to God the Father in accordance to the trinity, but who is the Bride? Let’s take a look one chapter before.
Revelation 21:9-10 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.
The Bride is the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven. A good amount of Christians believe that an actual city is going to drop out of heaven, and that is how this prophecy will be fulfilled. But let’s think about this for a second.
The bible says that the Heavenly Jerusalem is the bride, the wife of the Lamb. The Lamb in this verse, is it talking about an actual 4 legged animal? Everyone knows this is not the case, but that the Lamb here refers to Jesus Christ. This is one of the many times something in the Bible is written in parables.
One thing to keep in mind is that the whole book of Revelation does not say that the Lamb is Jesus. The only reason we know that the Lamb is Jesus is because of another verse in the Bible.
1 Corinthians 5:7 … For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Just as Jesus is not an actual lamb, the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven is not an actual city. Then how can we know who the heavenly Jerusalem is? We learned who the Lamb was by referring to another verse in the Bible. In the same way, we must find a verse in the Bible that reveals who is the heavenly Jerusalem.
Galatians 4:26 – But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.
The title of “mother” is only given to the one who gives life, then if we are referring to the Jerusalem above as “mother,” it means She can give life. Also, in this verse, the word “above” indicates the kingdom of heaven (John 8:23). Analyzing this verse carefully we can see that the Jerusalem in Heaven can give life, but since we know that in heaven only God can give life, this must mean that the Jerusalem above is God; God our Mother. The Bride, the Wife of the Lamb, She is our Mother.
Seeing the verses above we come to understand that God the Mother was always in the Bible, but people did not know about Her. However, She is the one who alongside the Holy Spirit will give us the water of life, which is the way to Eternal Life.
The World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) believes in God the Mother on the basis of the Bible. Come to the nearest Church of God and receive the water of life, which is only given by the Spirit and the Bride.
